Dubai Introduces 70-Day Paid Maternity Leave Policy for women

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

A Dubai-based company, Alpha Nero, has introduced a progressive maternity leave policy, extending it to 70 fully paid days starting in February 2024.

This move is part of a broader trend among local companies aiming to provide better work-life balance and support for working mothers. Severine Hoss, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Alpha Nero, emphasized the importance of allowing women extra time to recover, bond with their babies, and ensure their family's well-being.

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the mandatory maternity leave stands at 45 calendar days, with federal government employees receiving 60 days off work. Additionally, new mothers are entitled to two 30-minute breaks for breastfeeding until the child is 2 years old. Recognizing the need for further flexibility, Federal National Council (FNC) member Maryam Majid bin Thaniah proposed allowing working mothers with children under 10 to have flexible working hours, splitting time between office and remote work.

Alpha Nero's decision to extend maternity leave reflects its commitment to supporting women in the workforce. With women occupying key positions such as CFO and COO and heading departments like logistics and accounts, the company has experienced firsthand the positive impact of female leadership. CEO Simon Hacker emphasized the significant role women play within the organization, highlighting their contributions in what is traditionally considered a male-dominated industry.

As signatories of the Women Empowerment Principles (WEP), Alpha Nero prioritizes enhancing work-life balance for its female employees. The company's maternity leave policy is aligned with its mission to provide fulfilling careers while allowing sufficient time for family responsibilities, thus mitigating the risk of burnout.

This initiative mirrors a broader shift in the UAE's corporate landscape towards more parent-friendly policies. Other companies, like White Label Media and Tish Tash Communications Agency, offer extended maternity leave, flexible working hours, and remote work options to support working mothers. Fine Hygienic Holding is another example, providing 16 weeks of fully paid maternity leave along with paternity leave to foster a supportive environment for new parents.

These measures underline the growing recognition of the importance of work-life balance and support for working parents in the UAE's business community. By implementing such policies, companies aim to attract and retain talent while promoting inclusivity and diversity in the workplace.
