UAE to Implement Smart Transportation system for all public schools in Abu Dhabi

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

The Integrated Transport Center of the Department of Municipalities and Transport has declared the expansion of the "Salama" smart application to encompass all government schools and select nurseries in the emirate.

This extension brings the total number of educational facilities integrated into the application to 672, with the collaborative efforts of the Department of Education and Knowledge and the Emirates School Education Foundation aimed at creating a unified and comprehensive smart system for school transportation management.

This initiative is directed towards enhancing the security and safety levels for students utilizing school buses. Currently, 239,000 male and female students out of a total of 460,000 students in the emirate, equivalent to 49%, utilize the school transportation service.

The goal is to instill confidence among parents in the school transportation sector by facilitating improved communication between them and schools throughout Abu Dhabi.

In the initial phase, more than 15,000 parents downloaded the Salama application, benefiting from its features that provide real-time information about school trips. Parents can access details about trip status, start time, trip direction, and the boarding or disembarking time for their students. The application also facilitates reporting student absences, knowing the expected arrival time to school or home, sending notifications prior to the bus's arrival, including details about the driver and supervisor, and direct communication with both.

Moreover, the Salama application empowers bus supervisors to record student boarding and disembarking, report on the trip's status, and input any emergency notes in the smart system. This information is monitored through the center's control center, aiding in the planning, implementation, and enhancement of strategic projects to improve security, safety, and the quality of school transportation services.

The outputs of the system comprise a central platform and smart applications accessible to parents, educational institutions, transportation operators, drivers, and bus supervisors. This enables real-time monitoring of students' journeys and communication with school buses on the road.

The central platform further serves as a tool to evaluate the performance of authorities in school transportation, ensuring the timely arrival of students while accounting for traffic conditions during peak times. The system's capabilities contribute to rapid responses to emergencies, fostering increased levels of security and safety.
