Opening of an 11 km long bridge linking the Abu Dhabi Islands

Ahmed Moawad - | Arab News

On Thursday, a fresh new bridge that spans 11 kilometres and connects Al Reem Island, Umm Yifenah Island, and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street in Abu Dhabi was inaugurated for use by vehicular traffic. The bridge was named in honour of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, who was the former ruler of Abu Dhabi.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the bridge was inaugurated by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

Two of the seven bridges in the project span water, for a total of 3.8 kilometres. Aldar, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, constructed the six-lane roadway, which has a maximum hourly capacity of 6,000 vehicles in each direction.

Officials have indicated that the developers employed arched causeways and precast concrete components to keep the water moving and minimise the impact the project would have on the nearby mangrove wetlands.

The arching causeway provides protection for the aquatic creatures in the area while also permitting passage for ships. On the neighbouring island of Jubail, which is not too far away, mangroves have also been planted.

Because encouraging local business was one of Aldar's primary objectives, the majority of the company's resources came from inside the state in which it is headquartered.

The construction of the bridge and the beginning of the planning process for the Mid Island Parkway both began at the same time. In the not too distant future, this will function as a connection connecting Al Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Raha Beach, and Khalifa City.

By 2028, this network, which will feature bike lanes, footpaths, and environmentally friendly scenery, is expected to be fully operational.
