The United Arab Emirates declares that new legislation will take effect in 2024 and requests that everyone follow it.

The UAE passes legislation governing the media in the nation.

The regulation addresses media standards and compliance, age restrictions on movies, and permits for social media advertisements.

The UAE implements a new law in 2024 and requires everyone to abide by it.

The government of the United Arab Emirates has issued a federal decree governing media outlets, individuals, organizations, and free zones. Under certain restrictions and guidelines, it permits both natural persons and legal organizations to own media outlets and institutions.

Production, distribution, printing, and publication of media content are all considered media activities under the law. It also includes digital, audio, and video broadcasting that is either free or inexpensive.

The legislation deals with the granting and monitoring of licenses and permissions necessary to carry out various media operations.

The law also establishes the hierarchy of the UAE Media Council's authorities and the local government bodies in charge of media regulation.

UAE legislation governing the media

The decree mandates that all media individuals and organizations doing business in the United Arab Emirates adhere to the national criteria for media content, which include:

Regarding the divine, Islam, other religions, and other beliefs
Honor the nation's institutions, symbols, and sovereignty, as well as the paramount interests of the United Arab Emirates and its people.

Adhere to the national and international directives and policies of the nation.

Prevent any negative effects on the UAE's diplomatic ties.

Honor the national identity, cultural practices, and societal values.

Furthermore, both individuals and media outlets are obligated to refrain from:

Spread or spread information that undermines social cohesiveness or national unity.

Encourage acts of violence, hostility, or strife among society's constituents.

Use the legal and economic systems of the United Arab Emirates carelessly.

Ignore privacy laws and people's personal lives.

Disseminate rumors, inaccurate or misleading information, or anything else that can encourage someone to commit a crime.

licenses for movies, books, and video gamesPermissions to screen films and other creative productions must be issued by the UAE Media Council in accordance with the order. It will be in charge of identifying the age groups appropriate for viewing media and entertainment content, in addition to specifying the classifications of the Media Content Rating System for print and creative products, such as books, video games, and movie production.

Additionally, the Council grants permits to people who offer media material or advertising on social media and other contemporary technological platforms, either for free or at a cost.

According to the order, media outlets and those with licenses or authorizations must be under the watchful eye of the appropriate authorities. It gives the Council the authority to monitor and examine individuals, media outlets, and establishments, including free zones.

The law states that the UAE Media Council would support the protection of intellectual property among UAE citizens, businesses, and media organizations in collaboration with the appropriate authorities.

The decree stipulates that those who are subject to this law and media organizations have a year to change their circumstances in accordance with its provisions; however, a Cabinet decision may extend this time frame.
