On Tuesday, a Japan Airlines aircraft caught fire on the runway at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo. This incident occurred just one day after a strong 7.6-magnitude earthquake devastated large areas of Japan's western coast. The NHK channel aired television images depicting the plane taxiing on the runway while fire emerged from the lower section of its fuselage.
According to a spokesperson from Japan Airlines, the aircraft that ignited at Haneda International Airport was carrying over 300 passengers.
According to Japanese media reports, a Japanese aircraft caught fire after colliding with a Coast Guard plane on the runway during its travel.
According to a witness's account on the X website, they observed a plane detonating in their vicinity and thereafter released a video depicting the passenger airliner engulfed in flames.
Firefighting units swiftly mobilised to the location, as captured in the NHK camera, where firemen made intense efforts to suppress the flames using several hoses.
All passengers were successfully evacuated from the burning plane at Tokyo Airport. However, it has been claimed that 5 individuals are currently missing on board the Japanese Coast Guard plane following the incident.
On the other hand, the Japanese Meteorological Agency recorded seismic activity in the vicinity of the city of Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures after 4 p.m., with the strength of one of the earthquakes reaching 7.6 on the Richter scale.
Japan also lowered its tsunami alert level, but strongly advised its residents not to return to their homes due to the risk of catastrophic waves following a series of earthquakes. Seismic events, the most significant of which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, led to fires and structural collapses throughout the western coast of Honshu Island.
Shortly after 4 p.m., the Japan Meteorological Agency recorded more than a dozen earthquakes in the Sea of Japan, near the coast of Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures.
The agency issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa, and a minor tsunami warning for the remaining western coast of Honshu Island.
