Sharjah: Drop all these traffic violations

Abdallah Shahin - | UAE

Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, issued a directive to suspend all traffic violations that took place during the period of economic depression. This action was taken in accordance with the police's obligations to society, taking into consideration the extraordinary circumstances resulting from the adverse effects of the weather depression experienced by the nation.

In contrast, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has effectively incorporated artificial intelligence into its traffic management system by establishing a connection between 48 traffic signals within the emirate and utilizing artificial intelligence technology. This initiative seeks to optimize traffic flow and mitigate congestion.

The system conducts real-time analysis of traffic data, which is monitored by a network of sensors, cameras, and sophisticated algorithms. This data collection and analysis encompass various aspects, such as the quantity of cars present at intersections, their respective directions, and the identification of peak periods.

The data is processed by the system, which then utilizes artificial intelligence to adjust the timing of traffic signals. This adjustment is made in response to the fluctuating traffic density, allowing for the extension of the green light duration in the busiest direction. Conversely, in low traffic conditions, the green light duration is shortened to promote smoother flow in other directions.

Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, asserted that this technology possesses the ability to autonomously learn and adapt. As additional data is gathered, it becomes more proficient in forecasting traffic patterns and modifying the timing of traffic lights. This could potentially result in a 30% enhancement in traffic flow.

Al-Othmani highlighted that the Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, is actively engaged in efforts to improve the operational effectiveness of key transportation routes, such as Al-Ittihad Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and the Emirates Transit Road. The objective of these endeavors is to streamline the movement of vehicles and enhance the safety of roads, alongside implementing internal road paving initiatives in 20 residential zones in Sharjah and the Central Region.

The speaker further stated that the Authority's all-encompassing development strategy encompasses the construction of supplementary pedestrian bridges in regions characterized by dense populations, the incorporation of 10 electric buses into the public transportation fleet, anticipated to be operational within the upcoming six months, and the augmentation of electric car charging stations from 50 to 200 within a span of three to four years. Arrival.
