Indian police arrest unlicensed hospital boss after six babies die in a fire

Asma Ahmed - | World

The tragic incident at an unlicensed hospital in New Delhi sheds light on the devastating consequences of negligence and a lack of adherence to safety regulations.

Negligence leads to tragedy

Neighboring homes tightly sandwiched the narrow, two-story building, devoid of fire exits, obstructing the access of fire engines and complicating rescue efforts.

The Indian police have taken action against a doctor and the owner of the hospital following the heartbreaking loss of six newborns in a fire that engulfed the New Born Baby Care hospital in New Delhi's Vivek Vihar area. Late Saturday evening, the blaze erupted, revealing a glaring absence of fire exits in the crowded ward, trapping the helpless infants.

Heart-wrenching accounts from grieving parents paint a picture of anguish and despair. Anjar Khan, who lost his 11-day-old daughter in the inferno, expressed the profound pain of losing a child he never had the chance to hold. Similarly, Vinod Sharma mourned the loss of his day-old son, expressing disbelief and placing blame on the hospital authorities for their negligence.

The tragic incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and building codes in India. Poor building practices, overcrowding, and disregard for safety protocols have contributed to a string of devastating fires across the country. Authorities must prioritize the safety of citizens by implementing robust measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The hospital's lack of a fire exit system, coupled with its overcrowded conditions, highlights a blatant disregard for basic safety standards. Despite its license expiring in March, the hospital continued to operate, cramming twice the permitted number of beds into the ward. This gross negligence has resulted in tragic consequences, leading to the arrests of the doctor and facility owner.

While five infants rescued from the fire are still undergoing treatment, the community grapples with shock and outrage over the preventable loss of innocent lives. The incident has sparked a public outcry, with demands for accountability and justice echoing throughout the city. The tragedy leaves families to mourn their loved ones and seek answers and recourse against those responsible.

Regional Pattern of Tragedies Amidst the Heatwave

The hospital fire in New Delhi comes amidst a spate of similar incidents across India, further underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures. In Gujarat, a separate fire at an amusement park claimed the lives of 28 individuals, adding to the nation's grief and highlighting systemic failures in ensuring public safety. These tragedies coincide with a period of intense heatwave conditions, exacerbating the risk of fire-related incidents and emphasizing the critical importance of proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.
