Dubai Introduces Proposal for E-Scooter Registration with Number Plates

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

There have been several complaints from Dubai locals and drivers over the actions of e-scooter users. They say the bikers whiz by them at high speeds, park carelessly, obstruct pathways, and take up parking spots.

Because they are easy to pick up and ride, e-scooters have quickly become a city staple. They are easy to get, as e-scooters are not required to be registered, unlike motorized vehicles. They take the place of walking or other transit options, and their first- and last-mile services are well-received.

The issue of e-scooter registration was recently discussed at a community dialogue on traffic safety organized by Dubai Police. During the discussion, the need for registering e-scooters was highlighted. Currently, e-scooter riders are required to obtain a permit from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). However, battery-powered e-scooters themselves are not required to be registered. This lack of registration has led to concerns about safety and accountability.

Experts, including Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE, advocate for the registration of e-scooters. They suggest implementing a system where each e-scooter is assigned a unique ID or number plate. This would help raise awareness among riders that e-scooters are legitimate vehicles participating in road traffic. It would also make it easier to identify both the e-scooter and the rider in case of accidents.

Registration of e-scooters would also allow for stricter enforcement of laws pertaining to e-scooter specs, parking infractions, and speed limitations. The lack of a system to enforce these rules makes it hard for officials to keep tabs on e-scooter problems and find solutions. Registering e-scooters would lay the groundwork for safety regulations and regulation of their use.

Furthermore, e-scooter users may be able to get insurance with the help of registration. In the event of an accident involving a registered e-scooter, users have the option to purchase optional insurance that would cover bodily injuries. In the case of an accident involving an e-scooter, this would give passengers more security and help them financially.

The registration of e-scooters in Dubai is seen as a necessary step to address safety concerns and improve accountability. It would help create a safer environment for both e-scooter riders and other road users while also providing a framework for better regulation and enforcement of e-scooter usage.
