Dubai Authority to open a new 1.6km-long, 6-lane tunnel to ease traffic flow

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

Dubai plans to construct a cutting-edge tunnel spanning 1.6 kilometers and comprising six lanes, designed to handle a staggering 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Spearheaded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the project involves the development of the Al Khaleej Street Tunnel, extending from the Infinity Bridge ramp in Deira to the intersection of Al Khaleej and Cairo Streets.

A number of areas, including Abu Hail, Al Wuheida, Al Mamzar, Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Waterfront Market, and Al Hamriya Port, stand to greatly benefit from the improved connection that this massive undertaking guarantees. This project is an important part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, a grand effort by the RTA, and it is being overseen by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai.

The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project encompasses several key objectives, including facilitating smooth traffic flow from the Infinity Bridge to Deira and vice versa, transitioning the intersection of Cairo and Al Wuheida Streets from a roundabout to a signalized junction, and enhancing Cairo Street while establishing a connection between the bridge ramp from Dubai Islands and the new tunnel on Al Khaleej Street.

As part of the larger Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, stretching across 13 kilometers along Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Cairo Street, significant enhancements will be made to 15 intersections, benefiting a multitude of residential and developmental communities. This comprehensive initiative is expected to drastically reduce travel times from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes by the year 2030, serving approximately one million individuals.

Currently, the RTA is actively engaged in a 4.8-kilometer enhancement project on Sheikh Rashid Street, featuring the construction of three bridges totaling 3.1 kilometers in length. These bridges will accommodate a substantial volume of vehicles, with the first facilitating traffic flow between Sheikh Rashid Road and Falcon Intersection, the second serving traffic from Falcon Intersection towards Al Wasl Road, and the third catering to inbound traffic from Jumeirah Street to Al Mina Street. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a 4.8-kilometer roadway and the upgrade of surface junctions along Jumeirah Street, Al Mina Street, and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, among other essential infrastructure developments.
