UAE Offers Free Life-Changing Surgeries, Illuminating Children's Smiles This Eid

Cleft lip and cleft palate, conditions stemming from incomplete formation during fetal development, represent prevalent congenital abnormalities.

This Eid Al Fitr, the smiles of numerous children, previously afflicted by these conditions, gleamed brighter, courtesy of Operation Smile and the 'Smiley Summer Campaign' organized by a UAE mall. Through these initiatives, numerous children received complimentary surgeries and comprehensive care, including 10-year-old Josiah Pietersen from South Africa. Josiah, an avid football player, expressed his gratitude over the phone, highlighting the success of his recent bone graft surgery, a pivotal moment in his young life.

Josiah's mother, Leanne, described him as a resilient and energetic boy, emphasizing the emotional strain of witnessing her son undergo invasive procedures but also expressing gratitude for the exemplary care provided by the medical team. Such sentiments echo the experiences of many parents whose children undergo similar challenges.

Cleft deformities rank among the most common birth defects globally, affecting speech, hearing, dental health, and social integration. However, advancements in reconstructive surgery offer hope, with procedures beginning as early as three months old and continuing into adolescence.

The stories of families like Faten and Ahmed, who celebrated their baby Khalid's successful surgery, and Theriz and Roland, whose son Yuri underwent corrective surgery, underscore the transformative impact of these interventions. Moreover, the financial burden associated with such surgeries is alleviated through the support of organizations like Operation Smile.

Collaborations between Operation Smile and entities like City Centre Al Zahia in Sharjah demonstrate the power of collective efforts in transforming lives. Fuad Mansoor Sharaf, managing director of UAE Shopping Malls, expressed pride in the campaign's outcomes, emphasizing ongoing support for future initiatives. Morag Cromey-Hawke, executive director of Operation Smile UAE, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the campaign's positive impact on children and their families while expressing optimism for future collaborations.

In essence, these initiatives not only address physical deformities but also instill confidence and hope in children and families affected by cleft conditions, underscoring the importance of collective action in fostering positive change.
