UAE: Some firms offer parent-friendly policies, include paternity, miscarriage

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

In the United Arab Emirates, there is a noticeable trend among companies to reassess their policies with a focus on accommodating the needs of young parents. This shift reflects a growing acknowledgment of the importance of employee well-being and a commitment to ethical practices within the workplace.

One prominent advocate for these evolving policies is James Michael Lafferty, CEO of Fine Hygienic Holding, who draws from personal experience to underscore the significance of such initiatives. Following a personal tragedy involving his wife's miscarriage, Lafferty spearheaded the introduction of compassionate leave for employees experiencing similar hardships. This initiative stands in stark contrast to the prevailing norm, where miscarriages are often disregarded by employers, leaving grieving employees to navigate their loss without adequate support.

Fine Hygienic Holding has further demonstrated its commitment to employee welfare by implementing comprehensive parental leave policies, including extended paid maternity leave, provisions for IVF treatments, and even menstrual leave. Lafferty acknowledges the financial implications of these policies but maintains that prioritizing employee well-being ultimately benefits the company in the long run.

Other companies in the UAE, such as the Chalhoub Group and VFS Global, have also implemented progressive parental leave policies aimed at fostering a supportive environment for new parents. The Chalhoub Group's decision to extend paternity leave to 30 days reflects a recognition of fathers' crucial role in caregiving during the early stages of parenthood. Similarly, VFS Global's extension of maternity leave to four months underscores a commitment to enabling new mothers to bond with their infants and recover fully before returning to work.

Despite the positive intent behind these policies, companies like the Galadari Group face challenges in implementing them uniformly across diverse job profiles. With over 1,000 unique roles spanning various industries and countries, designing inclusive policies requires careful consideration and flexibility. The Galadari Group's approach involves tailoring maternity leave and remote work options to accommodate the diverse needs of its workforce.

The shift towards more inclusive parental leave policies in the UAE reflects a broader recognition of the importance of supporting employees through significant life events. While challenges exist in implementing these policies across diverse work environments, companies that prioritize employee well-being stand to benefit from increased loyalty, productivity, and overall satisfaction among their workforce.
