The UAE's regulatory ban on outdoor work during the hottest months ensures worker safety.

UAE Implements Annual Midday Work Ban

The UAE's annual ban on outdoor work during the hottest months, effective from June 15 to September 15, marks its twentieth consecutive year. Instituted to safeguard laborers from extreme summer temperatures, the regulation prohibits outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm. This initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), reflects the country's commitment to occupational health and safety standards, aiming to prevent heat-related injuries among workers.

Violations of the midday work ban incur fines, with establishments facing penalties of AED 5,000 ($1,360) per worker and up to AED 50,000 ($13,600) for multiple violations. The Ministry actively monitors compliance through its call center, operational six days a week in multiple languages, and a smart application for reporting infractions.

Support for Delivery Workers

In collaboration with government bodies and private sector partners, MoHRE has expanded initiatives to support delivery service workers during the midday break. This year, 6,000 designated rest stations across the UAE will provide respite for delivery personnel, facilitated by an interactive map for easy access. Companies such as Talabat, Deliveroo, and Noon, along with various dining and retail establishments, contribute to this effort to ensure the well-being and safety of delivery workers amid soaring temperatures.

Moreover, MoHRE has launched a national platform for registering workers' housing, aimed at enhancing living standards and compliance with accommodation regulations. This initiative underscores the UAE's commitment to improving workers' quality of life and ensuring adherence to labor laws.

The UAE's comprehensive social protection framework further includes initiatives like the Unemployment Insurance System and the Saving Scheme, offering financial security and investment opportunities to workers. These systems, alongside wage protection and occupational health and safety measures, constitute vital components of the UAE's labor market infrastructure, prioritizing worker welfare and fostering a safe and supportive working environment.

Moreover, the UAE's midday work ban and accompanying support systems exemplify its proactive approach to safeguarding laborers' health and rights, reinforcing its status as a leader in promoting occupational safety and welfare within the region.
